91-year-old lolo graduates from senior high school; hailed as “Model Student of the Year”

A 91-year-old man from San Gabriel, La Union is now viral online as he graduated from senior high school in Balbalayang National High School despite his age.

Federico Sibayan Bentayen Sr, known by the nickname Lolo Pedring, completed his high school education on June 29 under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program of the Department of Education.

Because of his dedication to finishing his studies, he was also recognized as the "Model Student of the Year" and was chosen to deliver a speech at the graduation ceremony to inspire his batchmates.

According to Lolo Pedring's son, Randy, his father had to stop studying when he married their mother and has to raise him and his five other siblings. The old man was not able to continue his education immediately because he also prioritized his work so he can provide for the needs of his family.

“In 1959, my Dad and Mom together with my 2 sisters went to Palacapac Candon Ilocos Sur to plant Tabacco, in 1965 he moved to Baguio City to work with my Uncle (Alipio's Pioner Wood Carving) in 1973 he went to Atok Benguet Western Minolco Corporation to worked as a Miner,” Randy narrated.

Although many years have passed since he last attended school, Lolo Pedring’s hope to finish his studies never faded. Hence, after his retirement, he enrolled in Balbalayang National High School at 88 and successfully finished K-12 at 91.

Many netizens are now in awe because of Lolo Pedring’s achievement. Many congratulated and wished him luck as he continue to achieve his dreams and aspirations in life.
