Ph, first to have SpaceX internet service in Southeast Asia

Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon M. Lopez has announced that the Philippines will be the first country in Southeast Asia to make use of SpaceX internet service via satellite.

The project proposed by the Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) founded by Elon Musk is expected to push through in the last three months or before President Rodrigo Duterte's term ends.

SpaceX will provide internet services in the country using the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network constellation also known as Starlink.  It is expected that this will give a faster broadband speed, better connection, and capabilities for telecommunication services to Filipinos at an affordable price.

“Their system will augment as well as complement existing broadband capacities. This will further capacitate micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), facilitate online learning, e-commerce and fintech,” said Lopez.

He added that the Board of Investments (BOI) is currently helping SpaceX with its application while it visits the target location of their gateway.
