Factory worker seeks help after receiving centavo coins as his salary

A factory worker from Valenzuela City sought the assistance of the city's mayor after his employer gave him centavo coins as his 2-day salary.

According to Russel Mañosa, he received 5- and 10-centavo coins worth P1,056 as his compensation for two days of working in the factory.

Mayor Rex Gatchalian immediately responded and communicated with the factory which was identified as the Next Green Factory to confirm the allegation.

To Gatchalian, paying the employee with centavo coins after their hard work is an insult to their dignity.

As the politician dug deeper on the case, he also found out that the Next Green Enterprise has yet to pay Manosa  P55,614 for his four months of service in 2019, and another month of service from May to June 2021.

Other violations were further found to be committed by the factory, hence Gatchalian ordered a 15 days suspension to the business.

"In 15 days…kung may pagkukulang pa at may isang worker na hindi ninyo ma-settle kahit previous worker, mapupunta tayo sa revocation," warned Gatchalian.

Various labor officials like Secretary Silvestre Bello III and Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez asserted that payment of coins is considered as legal but “discriminatory” and “impractical.”
