Everyone felt inspired and motivated after a 62-year-old grandmother went viral online for continuing and finishing her high school education in spite of all struggles she has as a senior citizen.
Lola Josephine Amante Villatema just graduated from junior high school at Timoteo Policarpio Memorial School in Norzagaray, Bulacan through the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
ALS is an alternative program of the Department of Education which provides opportunities for out-of-school-youths and adults to pursue their education.
In an interview with PhilSTAR L!fe, Lola Josephine shared some of her experiences while studying.
She mentioned that studying in ALS is challenging for her because she is taking care of her six grandchildren. The age gap between her and her classmates also makes her feel shy and uncomfortable at times.
Nevertheless, the senior citizen is happy because although most of her classmates are teenagers, they never fail to pay respect to her.
“Nahiya din ako kasi ‘yung mga kaklase ko, puro mga bata, puro mga teenager, ako lang pinaka matanda sa lahat. Pero mabait sila, ginagalang nila ako,” Lola Josephine said.
She added that she wanted to get her diploma even if she is already old so she can achieve her dreams and make her children proud of her.
“Gusto kong maabot mga pangarap ko na magkaroon ng diploma kahit may edad na at kapag umabot man sa punto na malapit na akong mawala, masasabi kong naabot ko ang mga pangarap ko at maipagmamalaki ako ng mga anak ko,”
Lola Josephine went viral online after a photographer named Glenn Mendoza shared his graduation picture on Facebook.
