'Tragic mistake:' Doctors amputate wrong leg of elderly patient in Austria

A human error described as a "tragic mistake" was made in an Austrian hospital after their doctors amputated the wrong leg of an 82-year-old patient, it said on Thursday (May 20).

According to Freistadt clinic in a statement, the patient is suffering from many illnesses. His previous diseases aggravated affecting his legs that is why he was advised to get his left leg amputated.

Unfortunately, the doctors have amputated the right leg instead of the left one and this was only noticed during a bandage change on Thursday morning.

"We are deeply shocked that on Tuesday, May 18, despite quality assurance standards, the wrong leg of an 82-year old man ... was amputated," the clinic said.

"Unfortunately the mistake, in which the right leg was removed instead of the left, occurred as a result of a sequence of unfortunate circumstances," it added.

The clinic is now conducting their investigation and is about to review their hospital standards.

Meanwhile, the patient has been offered psychological assistance and still has to undergo a procedure to amputate his left leg from mid-thigh.
