Mother and son graduate together from senior high school in Negros Oriental

Maria Cecilia Cadiz, 59, and her youngest, John Gabriel, 16, were doing homework together at the same time, not because the mother was scolding the child but because they are classmates in senior high school.

This year, the mother and daughter graduated together from the secondary high school of Bais City National High School, Negros Oriental.

Their graduation photos along with other classmates were posted on the Bais City Senior High School Facebook page. Cecilia is impressive because she combines being a mother, a student, and a vegetable vendor at the market. He and his son, John Gabriel, are tandem in answering the modules.

Because of the hardships of life during her youth, Cecilia was forced to stop studying and helped her father who was a fisherman.

“Magkasabay po kaming walong magkakapatid, pero wala kaming pera kaya nahinto po ako sa pag-eskwela.” John Gabriel said.

In 2017, Cecilia continued her studies. The school teachers encouraged him when he dropped off the children. She underwent the Alternative Learning System or ALS, the education system offered to those who want to study who did not graduate from traditional education.

After completing the ALS program, Cecilia was encouraged to continue what she had started, so she enrolled in senior high school, along with her youngest son. Cecilia had to fight the shame because she said, she experienced teachers and students staring at her.

"Tinitingnan po nila ako, siguro nanibago lang po at hindi makapaniwala na may kamag-aral silang ka-edad ko," Cecilia said.

He graduated from senior high school on July 2, 2022.

The lady said, nothing is impossible with God. You just have to persevere despite the trials.

Cecilia plans to continue her college education, and take an education course to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Meanwhile, John Gabriel plans to take a food-technology course.
