The Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) educational support for needy students is no longer available to Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries, according to Secretary Erwin Tulfo's statement on Sunday.
Tulfo claimed in an interview with Super Radyo dzBB that he received information from an Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) officer that 4Ps beneficiaries already receive educational aid from the DSWD and should therefore no longer be included in those receiving cash assistance until September 24.
"The 4Ps is already for educational purpose. It's not for the family. It's for the children. That's why there are P600, P700, P800 that are given monthly for their education. It is in the policy that they are already receiving educational assistance. They should no longer receive another educational assistance from the government." Tulfo said.
This is in contradiction to Tulfo's prior statement that, given that classes begin on August 22, 4Ps beneficiaries are also eligible for the financial aid.
Tulfo expressed regret to the 4Ps and made it clear that they are ineligible for the AICS program as a result.
"Maybe I was just in a hurry when the reporter was asking me. I said that the 4Ps are included. But based on the first DSWD announcement about that, 4Ps are not included." Tulfo said.
At the beginning of the distribution of the education support on Saturday, August 20, there were lengthy lines of pupils and their parents or guardians outside DSWD offices.
As a result, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has requested assistance from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to distribute education aid through local government units after a number of beneficiary students and parents were unable to arrive by the deadline on Saturday due to the massive crowds.
