Man marries an alligator for a prosperous life

A small-town mayor from Mexico married an alligator bride in a centuries-old ritual.

Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa tied the knot with the alligator wearing a wedding dress and colorful garments to pray for a prosperous life in the village of San Pedro Huamelula in southwestern Mexico.

The seven-year-old reptile is now known as the Little Princess and is considered to be a deity representing Mother Earth. Its marriage to the local leader is thought to be a symbol of humans joining the divine.

"We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river," said Sosa, mayor of the small fishing village on Oaxaca's steamy Pacific coast which is known for its rich and colorful indigenous culture.

The Little Princess' snout was tied shut to prevent unwanted biting as Mayor Sosa planted several kisses on her during the entire ceremony.
