To be a fruit and vegetable picker is a heavy and tiring job for the two Filipina workers from Japan. Nevertheless, they still stick to it as their hard work is being paid with the amount of money that they deserve.
In a video of "Make Your Day," it was mentioned that vegetable picker Ivy Villegas usually earns $1,700 or P90,000 every month while fruit picker Jera Bracamonte-Koyama receives a salary of $1,146 or P60,000.
The two both admitted that the income that they get from working in Japan is higher than what they earn in the Philippines. And for them, this is enough reason to be passionate about their job despite its physically demanding tasks.
"'Yung sahod ko naman po, malaki naman po siya, nagre-range siya sa P20,000 ($380). Nakakakain kami tatlong beses sa isang araw. Kahit ganoong kalaki ang sahod mo, parang wala akong ipon," said Villegas, comparing her earnings in Japan and in the Philippines.
"Bale ang sinasahod ko lang po kinsenas roon (Pilipinas) is nasa P4,000 to P5,000 siya. Doon pa lang, na-realize ko na na kulang talaga 'yung sinasahod ko. Siyempre kailangan kong mag-provide para sa family ko," shared Koyama who went to Japan with the hope of finding better opportunities for her.
As a vegetable picker, Villegas harvests vegetables and piles them in a box which she will carry on the way to the warehouse. Meanwhile, Koyama is an all-around worker in a fruit park where she plants and harvest strawberries and fixes the roofs of the greenhouse.
Both do their tasks with determination under the scorching heat of the sun. They do not complain about the nature of their work because they get what they deserve during their pay days.
