A new ray of hope and inspiration shine upon the netizens after a student shared her journey on how she was able to stay and graduate from college by selling mani and chicharon.
According to Jemaima Joy Salas, she started selling chicharon and mani when she entered college since her grandmother who raised her was not capable enough to send her to school.
“Nagsimula ako magtinda talaga since mag-college ako until now na gagraduate, ’yun ang ginagawa ko ’pag may pasok. Ginawa ko ’yun dahil ’di sapat ’yung kinikita ng lola ko para pag-aralin ako sa college at mas lalo ako nagpursige magtinda no’ng namatay lola ko year 2014,” Salas told The Philippine STAR.
Salas is lucky enough because everyone at her university, including her professors and classmates, supported her business by allowing her to sell her products inside the campus and even inside the classrooms.
There are times that the professors would even allot a few minutes for Salas to accommodate her buyers before they start their lecture.
“Tapos kapag naman nasa classroom na’ko, hinahayaan ako ng mga professor ko na umupo sa tabing bintana para ’pag may bibiling estudyante, lalapit lang sila sa bintana para bumili. Pinapayagan nila ako dahil alam nga nila pang support ko ’yun sa pag-aaral ko,” Salas said.
“May times din na bago kami mag-klase pabibilhin muna ng mga prof ’yung mga classmates ko sa’kin para magkabenta na agad ako. May times na ’pag nasa hallway ako naglalako, tatawagin ako ng prof para papasukin sa room para magbenta with matching pananakot na: ’Pag di kayo bumili wala kayo dagdag points sa’kin,” she added.
Looking back with her sacrifices, Salas cannot help but to remember the ultimate reason why she decided to sell, that is to finish her education. And now that she has got her diploma in entrepreneurship, she plans to make her small-time business of selling chicharon and mani into an actual business.
