Former President Noynoy Aquino dies at 61 due to kidney disease

Former President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino passed away on Thursday morning (June 24) due to kidney disease, according to his family.

"It is with profound grief that on behalf of our family I am confirming that our brother, Benigno 'Noynoy' S. Aquino III, died peacefully in his sleep," said Pinky Aquino-Abellada, sister of Aquino.

Aquino-Abellada said his brother was declared dead at 6:30 am due to kidney disease secondary to diabetes.

On Thursday afternoon, the remains were immediately cremated at the Heritage Park at Taguig. His urn carrying his ashes was brought to final resting beside his parents at Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City on Saturday.

Aquino, 61, has been silent and out of the sight of the public ever since he stepped down from his position as the Philippine president five years ago.

According to ABS-CBN News, Aquino, a known smoker, was admitted at the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City where her sister Kris Aquino was recently spotted.

The former President was persuaded to run for office in 2010, succeeding Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Before serving as the country's top leader, he first acted as a senator for six year and a lawmaker, representing the Tarlac constituency north of Manila from 1998 to 2007.
