According to the report of Manila Bulletin, Jessica Dimalanta was suddenly attacked by a group of men while she was in a car stunt show with her friends in San Francisco on Sunday (March 21).
The men opened the vehicle that Dimalanta was riding and shot her in the eye. One of her friends was hit while the other three were marked safe.
The victim was immediately brought to UCSF Mission Bay Hospital and was later transferred to San Francisco General Hospital. Her uncle, Dexter Martin, said the bullet went “straight through her right eye,” leading to Dimalanta's permanent impairment.
The victim's family believed that she was attacked for being Asian, however, the authorities are yet to confirm if the incident was a hate crime.
Dimalanta is now in a non-threatening condition but still recovering from her injuries and from COVID-19 which she acquired while staying in the hospital.
